SoBigDataIP
SoBigData is a pan‐European RI dedicated to social mining and big data analytics. The RI serves as a dynamic nexus for innovative research, offering a fully open and collaborative environment where experts from computer science, social sciences, humanities, and related fields can leverage cutting‐edge tools and advanced methodologies. Building on the solid technological foundations validated during the preparatory phase, the infrastructure is now moving toward a sustainable future, focusing on broader accessibility and an improved user experience. The Implementation Phase of the SoBigData RI focuses on putting into action the plans developed during its preparatory stage. During this phase, technological components, tools, and services, are refined and integrated for the public use. It also involves the support to establishing the ERIC and make it operational. More specifically, SoBigData IP has a central objective to integrate new services and enhance the way users interact with the RI, making services and facilities easier to navigate and use, while fostering active engagement across diverse communities, including researchers, industry, policymakers, and citizens. By consolidating access policies and expanding participation opportunities, SoBigData IP aims to create a more inclusive and impactful ecosystem. At the same time, the SoBigData IP is strengthening the RI pan-European relevance by aligning closely with EOSC and European Data Spaces, promoting interoperability, and supporting cross-border collaboration. This integration reinforces Europe’s research capacity and enables evidence-based policymaking. Finally, the pathway to establishing SoBigData as an ERIC is underway. Guided by the SoBigData IP, the RI is consolidating its governance, legal, and financial frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability. This transition will secure SoBigData’s position as a stable, trusted, and high-impact research infrastructure within the European landscape.
SmartLex’s Role
In the SoBigData IP project SmartLex will be responsible for:
- Contribute to strengthening the administrative, legal, and technological capabilities needed by partners to effectively manage the research infrastructure (RI) and, prior to the formal establishment of the ERIC, to defining the legal foundations for the long-term sustainability of the research infrastructure (RI) (such as, for example, establishing guidelines for training future staff on responsible data management, regulatory compliance, technical operations, financial systems, human resources structures, and governance tools, as well as ensuring that everyone understands the ERIC’s specific legal frameworks, VAT exemptions, reporting obligations, etc.);
- Ensure the legal, financial, operational, and technological preparations necessary for the submission and subsequent implementation of the SoBigData ERIC, by drafting all the essential documentation to establish the structural and legal foundations of the ERIC (including the development of the consortium’s legal charter, the governance framework, key operational policies, and the budget, as well as preparations for the technical readiness required to implement services, etc.);
- Define the rules for access to the Research Infrastructure (RI) and establish the plan for the technological upgrades necessary for the introduction and implementation of new services defined by the relevant work packages;
- Participate in the implementation of the Italian node as the central hub of the research infrastructure;
- Support the formal establishment of the ERIC and its stabilization.
